I am honored to have been selected as Best-In Show for my Graphic Design thesis with the "Know" Campaign. As an illustration heavy designer, I challenged myself to design through just typography, and I am proud of the final outcome for this campaign.
We currently live in an era of rapid changes that are occurring in every part of society. There are shifts in social, scientific, economic, and overall ideologies that are pushing the U.S. to be more progressive. However, the government and political climate at the moment are severely polarized, and the current administration is far from reflecting the kind of progress that Americans, specifically the young generations, are seeking. This is because most of today's youth still display ignorance towards politics. They are not as active in choosing their government compared to the older generations, which consistently results in their opinions and needs not being taken into consideration.
One of the biggest reasons behind this lag in political knowledge is the outdatedness of traditional media. Most of the political news coverage is done on standard cable news channels, and regular news channels are missing out on two of the biggest demographics, Millennials and Gen Zs. According to the Pew Research Center, Millennials and Gen Zs are most active on social media platforms, which also tend to be their primary sources of information (2019). In this case, mainstream media must adapt to these changes and use social media as a method of distributing information.
Of course, there are modernized versions of traditional media such as The New York Times app or the Crooked Media podcasts and YouTube channels. However, the attention span of the young generations is extremely short, and they would much rather scroll through social media platforms during their free time rather than seek out the most current political happenings. So, the media needs to bring such information to the various social media platforms if they seek to reach the youth of this country.
